POPULAR MECHANICS FOR KIDS (P.M.K.)

It was an educative TV series distributed by Hearst Entertainment where its success formula was due to a mix of pleasure, excitation and education in equal parts, giving the children half an hour of experiments and entertainment. This formula has filled a big gap in the television for the youngsters because television stations are constantly on the lookout for educative programs for its younger audience.

The PMK TV series was inspired by the Popular Mechanics magazine and produced by SDA Productions, a well-known producer in Montreal. The goal of this TV series was to examine how and why things worked they way they were but from a kid's point of view. The co-animators have visited zoos, planes, ambulance, buildings...

Most of the episodes were shot in Montreal and its surroundings but they also filmed in Florida, Houston, San Diego, Boston, Atlantic City in the USA and Toronto in Canada.

The co-animators Elisha Cuthbert and Jay had their parents that accompanied them and also a teacher on demand between the shootings to help them with their study.

CHARLES POWELL in P.M.K.

At the end of each episode there was an experimental segment with CHARLES POWELL who played the role of Charlie, Mister Fix-all. Charlie and the youngsters accomplished experiments, practical and fun scientific projects that kids could realize at home. Some of Mr Powell's favorite ones for the 1998 season were how to make a boomerang, ice cream and your own periscope.

It was a pleasant change for CHARLES POWELL because before, most of the parts he played were about lunatic killers.

There was also a web site for PMK with all the summing-ups of Charlie's experiments where fans were able to chat with the animators but unfortunately, the web site don't exist anymore.

P.M.K. was also broadcasted in the french language and distributed by Motion International. Alain Zouvi did Mr. Powell's french voice.
